Computer Access Policy

The Little Falls Public Library is pleased to provide a number of computers for the public to use.  Computers are equipped with recent versions of software that include the Microsoft Office Suite and allow access to the Internet.  The public computers also contain software known as Cassie that allows all computer users equal access time.  In order to access one of the public computers, patrons must meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a valid Mid York Library System card.

  • Have a library account in good standing.  Patrons with fines of $5.00 or more will be barred from access until the fine is paid down.

In addition, the following policies apply:

  1. Computers are available on a first come, first serve basis.  Reservations are not accepted.  There is a waiting list at the front desk in the event that all computers are in use.

  1. Patrons must use their own library card to access a computer.  Use of another patron’s card, including family members’, is prohibited.  Patrons found to be using another person’s card may be barred from future computer access.

  1. Patrons are automatically given one hour of computer use per day when they log on to the computer.  If there is at least one other computer available at the time, patrons may receive one, sixty minute extension on their time.  To ensure equal and open access to the computers, further extensions will not be granted unless special circumstances apply and are approved by Library staff.  In general, special circumstances refer to individuals taking exams or performing job search-related tasks, including working on a resume.

  1. Children under the age of ten must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  1. Space permitting, no more than two people are allowed to share a computer.  If all computers are in use, there can only be one patron per computer.

  1. Headphones must be worn by patrons using sound on a computer.  They are available at the front desk for checkout.

  1. Patrons may not alter software configurations, load personal software onto the computers, or download programs from the Internet.  In compliance with the Federal Copyright Act, patrons may not duplicate copyrighted software or programs on library machines.

  1. Patrons are responsible for any financial costs related to alterations or damage to the computers and related equipment resulting from misuse.

  1. At the end of a computer session, the Cassie software clears the user’s history.  Therefore, patrons are not able to save files to the computer.  Patrons wishing to save files must use either a floppy disk or thumb drive.  The Library is not responsible for any lost content.

  1. Patrons must report any equipment or software problems immediately to Library staff.

  1. Library staff members are able to provide general assistance with the computers; however they are unable to provide extensive personal instruction.  Patrons needing in-depth instruction are encouraged to attend computer courses which are offered throughout the year.

  1. Computers are turned off 5-10 minutes before closing time.  Patrons should complete their work, including any printing, prior to this time.

  1. Violation of any of these policies may result in the suspension of computer and/or library use privileges.
